• Timing chain & guide failure: The primary cam chain and balance-shaft chain stretch over time; plastic chain guides and the hydraulic tensioner's oil spray jet can block (accelerated by debris from paper oil filters), causing the chain to jump or break. Failures are commonly reported at 50,000–60,000 miles (~80,000–96,000 km) — significantly earlier than the nominal 100,000-mile chain life. • Oil consumption – piston rings / valve stem seals: High-mileage Z22SE engines are documented to burn oil, primarily via worn piston rings, secondarily via valve stem seals. Excessive crankcase breathing and blue exhaust smoke are primary diagnostic signs. Some engines require top-ups of 0.5 L per 2,000 km. • Water pump plastic impeller failure: OEM water pump uses a plastic impeller that can delaminate or shatter at higher mileage, causing sudden loss of coolant circulation and rapid overheating. • Throttle body / TPS fault – reduced power & rough idle: Carbon build-up on the throttle body and/or a faulty Throttle Position Sensor causes rough idle, stalling, EML illumination, and 'reduced engine power' mode.
